I can't believe the article I just read this morning. It has greatly disturbed me. I saw very a similar thing happen in my own high school. How are we going to think about these things? How are we going to react? I am not talking about "Christian activist" extremism but we have to have some kind of reaction, don't we? In youth group, we've been talking about sowing works of the flesh and works of the Spirit. What kind of fruit will this have in the lives of these two people? I think the answer is already obvious...The man (who is 41) left his wife and children to move in with this 18 year old girl because they were "just following their hearts". His family is not just broken but destroyed. Yet, this mentality of letting your emotions and feelings drive your decisions is the culture we live in. The idea is to tie your level of commitment to your feelings of love and you will find what it truly means to love. In other words, when you feel love for someone else, forsake everything and everyone in the name of love because that will bring you true happiness. This kind of thinking is so twisted from the truth. Is this the kind of love Paul was talking about when he listed of the fruit of the Spirit? What are your reactions?
Remember, we must guard the deposit of truth!
"follow your heart" seems to be the battle cry in american culture. Put stock in yourself, believe, follow your heart and all your dreams will come true. Now, that being said I don't find it hard to believe that men are constantly at war, constantly at unrest, and constantly in anguish. In fact the Bible says they love it (proverbs 8:36)because it is their will to reject the standard given them and they hate God because they are, in nature, dead. So, this thinking "If I have what I want and you have what you want" is conducive with their nature/will. Why wouldn't this man leave his family and be the death of them? He is concsiously seeking the will of his heart, which is only evil through and through. The more he desires the scarier it will get. Men void of the Spirit of God are monsters and they will have no regard for the moral standard given because they reject it and surpress all truth. Following their hearts of stone can only lead to one outcome. The Bible says they are at emnity with God (Romans 8:7) and they cannot want the things of God because they HATE God. This, accompanied by much sadness is my reaction.
ReplyDeleteJake I completely agree with you. It is the natural will of a man to seek the desire of his heart. The scary thing is that I sometimes think we, "the average Christian public" are not far removed from the same evil. Appreciate your input on this. This article definitely should cause a reaction.
ReplyDeleteI'm afraid that's lust, not love, and it's not their "hearts" that they're following.
ReplyDeleteGorges you are absolutely right that it's lust. That's a road that only leads to death. It's really quite sad. Thanks for your comment!
